Consultation And Preparation
Recently, the school decided to revamp its courtyard and transform it into a modern, innovative space for its learners. The school courtyard is an essential part of the learners’ lives, and it is here where they can relax, play and interact during break. The school wanted a reputable paving company that could design and innovate the space, and after much consultation, they selected Urban Pave.
Together with the school, we considered different design options and materials, including innovative and new ways of laying the paving. After much deliberation, they finally decided on a design that was both functional and visually pleasing.
Planning and Implementation
The first step in the project was to excavate the area that was just sand and old grass, and drop the level by 100mm to make way for the new design. Urban Pave then compacted the soil and started the design planning process.
One of the key elements of the design was the inclusion of the school’s emblem, a flamingo, which posed a challenge for Urban Pave. We had to ensure that the flamingo was integrated seamlessly into the design. The bricks were carefully laid and created a circle where the flamingo would eventually shine. To achieve this, we had a stencil/template 2m x 2m, printed, that was used to trace the flamingo shape. Once the bricks were cut into the flamingo shape, the area was concreted to form the final product.
In order to combat the dust bowl that was previously present in the courtyard, artificial grass was used between the paving to create leisure areas for the students. The entire project, from start to finish, took two weeks to complete, and the result was a beautiful, functional, and innovative space for the learners of Plumstead Preparatory School to enjoy.
Final Results
The courtyard now covers almost 400 square metres of paving and artificial grass, providing students with a clean, green and modern environment to play and relax in. The school and learners are thrilled with the results, and the courtyard has quickly become a popular gathering place for learners and teachers alike.
